It’s been two months since Jimmy Butler was shipped away from the Miami Heat following an ugly feud with team president Pat Riley, but the effects of his trade to Golden State have still reverberated through the organization to this day.
Even Miami legend Dwyane Wade, who played an integral role in recruiting Butler to South Florida in the first place, felt disappointed with how the saga unfolded earlier this year. More than anything, the three-time NBA champion was saddened by the long-term effects Butler’s feud with Riley will likely have on the organization’s image going forward.
“What I don’t like more than anything is just the stain it puts on our franchise,” Wade said. “We have one of the greatest franchises for the last 20, 30 years that’s in professional sports. We don’t want the conversation to be about that, we want it to be about the success that we’ve had and how we’ve created that success.”
Wade, who had a somewhat-messy divorce with Miami himself when he signed with the Chicago Bulls back in 2016, empathized with both sides in their mutual - albeit bitter - split this past February. However, he made it clear that he wasn’t a fan of how each party went about publicly airing their grievances with the other.
“You understand that relationships come to an end. A six-year relationship is a long time for a lot of people, he said. “So it’s OK that their relationship needed to come to an end. It’s just sometimes it doesn’t always have to be so nasty or ugly.”
Wade went on to finish his career in Miami after being traded back from Cleveland in 2018. As of right now, however, there will likely have to be some patching up of wounds between Butler and the Heat front office if he’s to ever return to South Florida himself.
