Last week, the NBA released its starters for both the Western Conference and Eastern Conference and tonight, the reserves for the All-Star Game were announced.
Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, Bam Adebayo, Julius Randle, Tyrese Maxey, Donovan Mitchell, and Paolo Banchero are the Eastern Conference All-Star reserves. Trae Young, despite averaging 27 PPG and 10.9 APG, did not make it.
Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton, Bucks guard Damian Lillard, Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, and 76ers center Joel Embiid are going to be the starters for the Eastern Conference this year.
Young is having one of the best seasons of his career. Young is averaging 27 PPG (10th in the NBA) and 10.9 APG (2nd in the NBA). He is shooting 42.3% from the field this season and 36.8% from three. He has been one of, if not the best, playmaker in the NBA this season, and while the record has not been what the Hawks had hoped, Young has easily been one of the best players in the NBA. I think that he should have been selected amongst the reserves and he had a really good case with the numbers he put up so far this season.
All-Star reserves were selected by head coaches, not fan voting or the media.
Here is how the starters were determined per the NBA:
"Through the NBA All-Star Voting presented by AT&T program, fans were able to vote for their favorite All-Star starters from Dec 19 to Jan. 20. NBA players and media also joined fans in selecting the NBA All-Star Game starters. Fans will account for 50 percent of the vote, while all current players and a media panel will account for 25 percent each. Players and media will be able to complete one ballot.
After all votes are tallied, players will be ranked in each conference by position (guard and frontcourt) within each of the three voting groups – fan votes, player votes and media votes. Each player’s score will be calculated by averaging his weighted rank from the fan votes, the player votes and the media votes. The two guards and three frontcourt players with the best score in each conference will be named NBA All-Star Game starters. Fan voting will serve as the tiebreaker for players in a position group with the same score."
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow night vs the Phoenix Suns.
