Erik Spoelstra Makes Blunt Admission About Jimmy Butler Saga

Although Jimmy Butler led the Miami Heat to two NBA Finals appearances during his 5.5 seasons with the team, his departure from the franchise may cloud all he did for the team.

Following a negotiation process that saw the two parties unable to agree on a contract extension before the season, things only got uglier as the season went on. After it was reported that the Heat wanted to trade him, Pat Riley denied the report days later, only for Butler to request a formal trade a few weeks later.

After Butler was accused of not playing his hardest, he went on a spicy rant, indicating he had lost his joy for basketball with the Heat while also alluding to being traded. The team decided to suspend him for seven games, only to suspend him for two more games after he missed a team flight.

That wouldn't be his last suspension either as five days later, he was suspended indefinitely for walking out of a practice following the revelation he was being benched. He was ultimately traded to the Golden State Warriors in February, Butler has since found his "joy," while the Heat limped to the end of the season.

When asked about the drama on Wednesday at the team's exit meetings, Erik Spoelstra made it clear that Butler's antics took a toll on the team.

Spoelstra admitted it "certainly" had an impact on the season, but tried to be optimistic about the matter.

"It was a good 5 year run," Spoelstra said. "When things end often times end not as loudly as this but it ends where there’s something. It’s unfortunate we all feel like it didn’t have to go to that level but we have clarity now, we’ve turned the page, we’re moving on."

The Heat ended up getting swept 4-0 in the playoffs by the Clever Cavaliers after becoming the first No. 10 seed to ever make into the playoffs following their play-in tournament win. The organization will certainly have a huge offseason ahead of them as they assess the roster moving forward.
