Jonathan Kuminga’s summer-long contract stalemate with the Golden State Warriors finally came to an end a week ago.
Jonathan Kuminga will return to the Golden State Warriors on a two-year, $48.5 million deal.
Even though Kuminga signed a new contract with the Warriors, there has already been trade speculation involving the 23-year-old.
Kuminga will be trade eligible on January 15th so that will give the Warriors a chance to trade him before the trade deadline if that is what they want to do.
Kuminga did play in the Warriors’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Lakers.
He came in from off the bench and finished with 5 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in 15 minutes of action.
While Kuminga didn’t have a big impact with his scoring, he did have a nice all-around performance in the Warriors’ win.
After the game, Kuminga appeared to be happy and Marc J. Spears said he saw him dancing.
“Happiness, joy, peace, which is surprising. I mean, I’ve been around a while, I remember Allen Iverson being unhappy in Memphis, Jimmy Butler, Kevin Durant…
“I saw Kuminga dancing after the game, he told me he was at peace.
“I think the guys, Steph, Draymond, Jimmy, and Buddy Hield have all given him support. I think that helped him a lot.”
Kuminga will find himself in an interesting spot heading into the 2025-26 NBA season.
Kuminga knows that the Warriors will likely try and trade him ahead of the trade deadline in February, so all he can do is focus on getting better despite the noise around him.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has preferred to play Kuminga from off the bench and that will continue to be the case going into this season. Therefore, Kuminga needs to make the most out of his minutes.
This season will be important for the Warriors not only when it comes to trying to win an NBA Championship but also for the development and future of Kuminga.
