ESPN’s Bobby Mark has predicted what Tyler Herro’s next contract will look like. Mark predicts that Herro will receive a three-year, 149.7-million-dollar extension with the Heat. That averages out to 49.9 million per season, which would be a massive jump from his salary of 29 million from this past season. Is Herro worth this potential massive pay increase?
If Tyler Herro were to receive this contract, it would be a reasonable offer considering the substantial salaries of NBA players. Still, if the Heat were to offer him this deal based solely on his performance, it seems excessive. Herro is a great player, averaging at least 20.1 points in the last four seasons.
His current contract of 29 million seems perfect for what he’s given, but he hasn’t produced to the level that a player making that type of money in this proposed extension should. If the Heat think there’s still more to his game, more power to them. However, Herro has averaged around 20-23 points per game, 4-5 assists per game, and five rebounds per game. This might be the player he is.
Herro has been good in the postseason as well. He averaged 17.8 points per game this past postseason, which was a career-high. In the four games against Cleveland, Herro was extremely inconsistent. His point totals were 21, 33, 13, and 4. If the Heat gives him this proposed contract, Herro better be scoring at the pace he did in Game Two consistently.
Tyler Herro has the talent to earn this contract, but he lacks consistency. It would be wise for the Heat to wait on this kind of deal because there isn’t anything in Herro’s game that suggests he should get 50 million per year. Show the Heat a little bit more, and we might be talking about that proposed deal.
Five players in the NBA make 50 million or more a season. Those players are Stephen Curry, Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal. The point is, to make 50 million per season, you have to be in a league of your own. At this point in time, it’s safe to say Tyler Herro is not in the same league as those five players.
