ESPN’s Jay Williams Doesn’t Hold Back on Anthony Edwards After Game 2 Defeat

Former NBA player turned analyst Jay Williams didn't mince words when stating the differences between Anthony Edwards and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander following the Oklahoma City Thunder's 118-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday.

Gilgeous-Alexander and Co. took a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. The brand-new NBA MVP went off with a game-high 38 points, while adding three rebounds and eight assists. Edwards responded with a 32-point, nine-rebound and six-assist performance for the Timberwolves.

This was the matchup to watch in this series, as Gilgeous-Alexander and Edwards are expected to compete for championships for many years. Williams thinks, though, that the difference is clear between them at this point.

During Friday's episode of "Get Up," Williams made a clear statement about Edwards' level of performance and what he needs to do to catch up with Gilgeous-Alexander.

The analyst claimed that the series is already over while explaining why Edwards hasn't become the face or the top dog in the league, adding that he's yet to reach Gilgeous-Alexander's level.

"I think that this playoff series is over, Mike, and I firmly believe that the coronation of Anthony Edwards was premature," Williams said.

"I think you saw a sizable gap last night and I know there's a three-year difference between a guy who is the MVP, who has a mental basketball IQ that is high and exceptional and a young player who is on his way to potentially becoming that down the line. But there's still a ton of maturity and basketball IQ that needs to be increased in order for them to get there."

This isn't the first time Williams has stopped people from crowning Edwards the face of the NBA. At the start of May, he gave that unofficial title to Jayson Tatum, noting that he's enjoyed more success than Edwards, yet people would give more flowers to the Timberwolves star.

Edwards has shown that he's a solid star, but if things don't change, it'll be the second consecutive season he loses in the conference finals.
