Following the 2025 NBA Draft, the Blazers’ future became the subject of intense discourse. The NBA community could not believe they selected Yang Hansen with the 16th pick. There was confusion, but the hype was also behind him, especially with the “Chinese Jokic” tag.
After the Portland Trail Blazers selected Yang Hansen with the first round, the NBA community felt collective shock. The reach came out of the blue, which led people to say it was way too sudden. Thankfully, Yang is proving he is a good pick for Portland.
The 2025 NBA Summer League was promising for the Trail Blazers, as the team strengthened Yang’s game. The Chinese version of Nikola Jokic might be too ambitious, but he does have some of the Serbian’s play style.
At the same time, the Blazers look ecstatic to play with him. Most of his teammates went to the Summer League, including Donovan Clingan. Many people expect them to compete for the long-term center role, but Clingan was supportive.
With the Blazers already seeing Yang play at his Summer League stint, they know they have a good player. The biggest talking point is his playmaking, as he has a natural feel for the game. However, he is also a stellar rim protector with his size.
His rebounding could use some improvement, but he often boxes out his matchup, as his teammates get the board. Yang should be more assertive on the glass, as he is tall enough to out-rebound everyone else.
With this unique skill set, Yang could become a long-term contributor to the Blazers. He could not be the Chinese Jokic, but as long as he can be productive, he can be great. New arrival and NBA veteran Jrue Holiday has already taken note of his young teammate.
“He’s been a superstar. He’s been hooping. We were talking about it earlier, how much media he’s had in Vegas. He deserves it. He’s been doing his thing. I’m not sure anybody saw how well he would play, but he’s been playing well. I’m excited,” Holiday said in his introductory press conference.
Yang is not the only promising player on the roster. They have a wide group of players, including Clingan, Scoot Henderson, and Shaedon Sharpe. One can even add Toumani Camara since he is only entering his third year in the NBA.

With Henderson as the focus of the rebuild and Sharpe’s constant development, the Blazers have potential. It will be challenging to maximize everyone on the roster, but the players all fit coach Chauncey Billups’ vision.
Add Yang into that mix, and it shows that the Blazers’ future looks bright. That is a good sign for the team, as they want to compete for a spot in the postseason. They are still developing, but with Holiday and Damian Lillard serving as veterans, this team has the right leadership.
Finding the right balance will be tough, but Billups is ready to handle it. That will be an obstacle, but Portland has the talent. It’s a good problem to have, as the Blazers have improved from mediocrity and have built the team. Now, it is up to them to deliver on the court with their performances, including Yang.
