The Los Angeles Lakers may once again position themselves to pursue one of the NBA’s biggest stars, Giannis Antetokounmpo . Reporter Jovan Buha noted that the Lakers could become a serious contender for the Milwaukee Bucks forward in 2026, depending on how his situation with Milwaukee plays out.
During his podcast, Buha mentioned that the Lakers could step in and make a strong offer if the Bucks decide not to trade Giannis to the New York Knicks or find New York’s proposal unappealing.
“So if that, for whatever reason, just can’t happen and Milwaukee refuses to play ball with New York because they just don’t want to trade him in conference, or they don’t like what New York’s offering, then the Lakers can swoop in and potentially offer a competitive package. They’ll have three draft picks as of next summer,” Buha remarked.
Buha acknowledged that the scenario is still unlikely, but it’s one the Lakers are keeping an eye on. The Bucks and Knicks reportedly discussed a potential deal earlier in the offseason, though those talks never led to anything concrete.
“So could you do something with Austin and three picks, and Dalton and Rui, maybe a Rui sign-and-trade or something? Could you get in the mix for Giannis with that package? Maybe. I think there are teams that could outbid them for sure, especially with draft capital, but it just depends on what Milwaukee wants and how they view things,” Buha added.
Giannis Antetokounmpo added to the growing buzz during his recent media availability, saying he’s “committed to the Bucks right now,” but also hinted that his stance could shift in six or seven months.
Many insiders believe this season might be Giannis’ final year in Milwaukee, especially if the Bucks once again struggle to make a strong playoff push. The team is under mounting pressure after three consecutive early postseason exits and the offseason departure of Damian Lillard.
Timing will be a major factor for the Lakers. By the summer of 2026, they could find themselves in a position that offers room to maneuver but also presents clear limits. If they hold onto their assets, Los Angeles will have three first-round picks available to trade. Combined with emerging talent like Dalton Knecht and reliable contributors such as Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura, the Lakers could assemble a compelling trade package.
If Giannis Antetokounmpo ever chooses to move on from Milwaukee, the Lakers shouldn’t be overlooked. History shows that whenever a generational superstar hits the market, Los Angeles usually finds a way to swoop in and steal that superstar.
