Former Clippers Player Gets Honest About Paul George Trade
USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest what-ifs in modern NBA history is the Clippers trading Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for Paul George. Almost every week, someone asks how LA's future would be if they never made the trade - sometimes, even their own former players talk about it.

On an episode of the Pat Bev Pod, Patrick Beverley took a moment to think about the Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for Paul George trade in retrospect.

"Looking at that trade now, who won," Beverley questioned. "Would you rather have kept Shai and those picks for Paul George?"

The most important thing to remember when thinking about that trade is that it was for both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. One thing Beverley acknowledges is that Kawhi likely advocated for the trade, too.

"I think it was Kawhi too," Beverley said. "I think coming in you get these star guys, I think that they think they need more help than what they really need. Outside looking in, Kawhi probably didn't know the makeup of our team. Honestly, after that year we took Golden State six games starting two rookies. We only needed one more guy. We only need the guy. The guy added with Gallinari, Shai, Sham, me, Lou, Trez."

Make no mistake, Patrick Beverley and the Clippers were still very happy to get Paul George on the team. He was coming off of a career year on the Oklahoma City Thunder where he was 3rd in MVP voting. LA had acquired two superstars, instead of just the one that they were hoping for.

"We was happy as f**k, like damn we got Paul George too," Beverley said. "Like this is going to be even more crazy. We were just thinking like, man, we get one main guy it's a wrap next year."

The Clippers should never regret trading Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for Paul George. In every single situation, you do that trade over again to get both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. The team had back-to-back years of realistic chances of winning an NBA championship, and it's a perfect example of why those moments always have to be capitalized.
