The Dallas Mavericks’ decision to trade Luka Doncic had ramifications for their franchise far beyond their roster construction.

The Dallas Mavericks made waves last season when they traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February.

The Mavericks traded Doncic to land Anthony Davis in what was a widely panned trade. Since then, things have been quite dramatic in Dallas.

In a surprising turn of events, the Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery, earning the right to draft Cooper Flagg as their next franchise star.

While they steadied the ship eventually, the early months after Doncic got traded were quite scary, and it even caused one Mavericks assistant coach to quit the team.

God Shammgod quit Dallas Mavericks over ‘spooky times’ after Luka Doncic trade

Former Dallas Mavericks assistant coach, God Shammgod, appeared on the It Is What It Is show with rap legends Ma$e and Cam’Ron to discuss his NBA playing and coaching career.

When discussing the Luka Doncic trade and why he quit the Mavericks, he admitted that while he appreciates everyone within the organization, the treatment of Doncic was a sign that he needed to leave.

“The thing about Dallas was, it was just getting spooky times, man. I love Dallas, and I’m cool with everyone that’s over there.

“When the [Doncic trade] went down, it was one of those things, if someone treats your man like that, it’s a countdown.”

Shammgod quit the Mavericks this summer and joined the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach, earning a promotion from his previous role as a player development coach.

Luka Doncic trade created rift within Dallas Mavericks organization

Even more than six months after the trade occurred, there is still so little we know about what went down within the organization.

Mark Cuban hinted at turmoil within the Mavericks over the Doncic trade, as there were people who, like him, didn’t want the superstar to get traded.

However, Mavericks GM Nico Harrison and a contingent of his supporters pushed the deal through, seeing the vision of Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving as their leaders.

In the end, we will only know the true details of the trade and what went on behind the scenes in a few years, when the people involved are at liberty to discuss it.
