Former first-rounder mostly a no-show for Warriors in playoffs

Former first-round pick Jonathan Kuminga isn't happy about his sparse playing time during the NBA postseason.

"It's tough to lock in every sing time. It's still tough to smile every time," the Golden State forward told San Francisco Chronicle reporter C.J. Holmes about his status. "You can't stop the sun from shining. At some point, the sun is going to come out."

On Thursday, Kuminga tweeted this, apparently in reaction to the story:

Kuminga is coming off a good second season, at times looking like the generational talent Golden State expected when it drafted him in 2021.

During the regular season, he averaged 9.9 points on 52.5 percent from the field and 37 percent from three. He was vital during Andrew Wiggins' 22-game absence, often guarding the opponent's best perimeter player. At times, his point-of-attack defense shined.

During the last month of the regular season, in particular, Kuminga made some eye-opening plays -- including these:

In playoffs, however, Kuminga has averaged only six minutes a game as head coach Steve Kerr has shortened his bench. Before the Western Conference semifinals against the Los Angeles Lakers, Kerr told the media that it could "potentially" be a series in which Kuminga sees an increased role.

That increased role has yet to come to fruition, but if his number does get called, Kuminga must be ready. His unique skillset is something Golden State has never had during its dynasty. After losing home court advantage in Game 1, the Warriors need all the help they can get.

The second-round series resumes Thursday at Golden State.
