Former Golden State Warriors prospect Jarred Shaw could face the death penalty by firing squad. Shaw, 34, was recently arrested in Indonesia after allegedly having cannabis candies. He was originally from Dallas, Texas, and was playing professional basketball overseas for the Tangerang Hawks in Tangerang, Indonesia before reportedly being banned from the Indonesian Basketball League.

Former Golden State Warriors Prospect Could Face Death Penalty

Shaw re-appeared in the news after local police raided his apartment in Tangerang, just outside the capital, Jakarta, and found 132 pieces of cannabis candies. Shaw was arrested on May 7, 2025, and was subsequently charged with drug smuggling. If found guilty, he could receive a life sentence or even the death penalty by firing squad.

Shaw, a former Utah State and Oklahoma State standout, wouldn’t be the first person if convicted and sentenced to the death penalty for drug-related crimes in Indonesia. Since 2015, Indonesia has executed 18 people for drugs. Of the 18, 15 were foreigners from Australia, Brazil, Malawi, the Netherlands, and Vietnam.

Former Warriors Prospect’s Legal Troubles

Shaw, a former David W. Carter standout, might not receive the death penalty, but he’ll likely face the consequences. Indonesia has one of the strictest anti-drug laws in the world. As a general rule, a person caught with drugs for personal use, including cannabis, a drug banned for both medical and recreational use.

Local police believe the cannabis candies, which came in a suspicious package, came from Thailand, a fellow Southeast Asian country where medical cannabis has been legalized since 2022. Therefore, he could be fined and/or imprisoned for the cannabis candies in his apartment.

Final Thoughts

Shaw was once celebrated for his skills on the basketball court but now faces the depressing possibility of life imprisonment and perhaps a death sentence. His case is uncertain due to the package’s quantity of cannabis and the country’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related offenses.

Few details have been released to the public, but he reportedly appeared in a detainee uniform and remained silent during a press conference. Indonesian authorities alleged that he intended to distribute the cannabis candies to his teammates. The Indonesian authorities’ allegation could further exacerbate his legal troubles if found to be true.
