Former MVP faces battle to remain in the NBA

Russell Westbrook left the Denver Nuggets earlier this season. He declined the player option on his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent. Unfortunately, that decision hasn't worked out as Westbrook would have planned.

Rather than landing on a new team with a more favorable salary, Westbrook finds himself in the NBA wilderness. As such, for the first time in 17 years, Westbrook could be on the outside of the NBA when the new season begins.

The Sacramento Kings have reportedly held interest in adding him to their roster, but have yet to make a formal offer. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, Scott Perry would need to trade a guard before bringing in the former MVP.

"The Sacramento Kings, who have been the most serious suitors in sign-and-trade scenarios, have been resisting the urge to make other, smaller moves all summer long because the Kuminga pursuit was a bigger priority," Perry reported. "More specifically, the odds of a Russell Westbrook signing go up if they know they’re completely out on Kuminga (though they aren’t expected to make that move unless they can make room in the rotation by trading a guard)."

Interestingly, Westbrook came into the summer having impressed for the Nuggets last season. He suited up for 75 games, starting 36 of them, and averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists per outing. He also finished seventh in Sixth Man of the Year voting.

Westbrook had every reason to bet on himself.

At 36 years old, Westbrook is undoubtedly past his prime. Yet, he's proven that he's still a serviceable guard, especially off the bench. It's hard to believe none of the league's 30 teams view him as a viable addition to their rosters.

Still, Westbrook will likely land on a new team at some point this season. His contributions will be deemed necessary by at least one front office. Nevertheless, his inability to find a suitor this summer will likely serve as a chilling reminder that his days in the NBA are numbered.

And sooner, rather than later, Westbrook will need to step away from the NBA and begin the next chapter of his life.
