Tom Thibodeau has the New York Knicks sitting third in the Eastern Conference with a 25-14 record. The franchise looks like a genuine contender, and has been drastically improved since the arrival of Karl-Anthony Towns.
Despite the clear improvements this season, and the year-on-year growth of the franchise under Thibodeau, his coaching methods are once again being questioned. Discussing the veteran coach's rotations have become somewhat of a cliché in recent years. Nevertheless, that is once again being used against him, as fans, media and former players look to poke holes in his strategy.
“At some point, the Knicks got to figure out their bench,” Former NBA player Sam Mitchell said following the team's loss the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday. “They got to start figuring out who on that bench has some type of role. Whether it’s defensively, offensively or whatever, that can provide a punch, because you can’t keep playing five guys 40 minutes per game.”

Against the Thunder, Thibodeau opened up his rotation, allowing nine players to play double-digit minutes. Generally, he will stick to an eight man rotation, with his starting five eating a considerable amount of playing time. However, his minutes management doesn't appear to bother his players.
"I feel like y'all give him flack all the time. No matter where he is," Towns said after the loss to Oklahoma City. "But y'all keep talking about him and that means he keeps getting a job and that means everyone keeps respecting him and knowing what he can do for a team. He's done it in Chicago, he did it in Boston, he did it with us in Minny. And he's doing it here. Even before I got here. So say what you want about Thibs — he gets the job done."

Under Thibodeau, the Knicks could make the Eastern Conference Finals this season—and if not this year, then likely next. He has developed the roster into one of the most competitive two-way units in the NBA, and his methods are proven to work. Questioning how he distributes minutes is fair, but it has also begun to go too far.
If the players defend him and the team is winning, then any criticism of his approach is off base. Sooner or later, the media must accept that this is who Thibodeau is, and he isn't going to change. Why would he? He's had success in multiple stops around the NBA, and a potential championship run doesn't appear to be too far into the future.
The Knicks are a contender largely due to the work Thibodeau has done in New York. He deserves to do things his way, at least then he can live or die with the results.
