Even if given a chance, nobody would want to be Ja Morant in today’s time.
Imagine averaging sub-20 points per game while also shooting mid-range, and despite giving all he had, the Memphis Grizzlies superstar was sidelined for a prolonged period with an elbow injury.
However, amid all the chaos, Morant’s future has quietly become a talking point across the league, and former NBA guard Joe Johnson believes he knows exactly where the Memphis star could rediscover his best form.
Speaking on the Nightcap podcast, the former Miami Heat guard pointed to South Beach as an ideal destination, emphasizing both structure and culture as key factors.
“I’m not going to lie, I think he would thrive in that Miami situation,” he said. “ I want to see Ja back out there throwing grenades, covering his ears… I never went to the club when I played for the Heat. We worked so hard I couldn’t wait to go lay down.”
Joe Johnson thinks Ja Morant would thrive if he got traded to the Miami Heat in the offseason:

Zooming out on his theory, the reasoning goes beyond fitting on the court. Miami’s identity has long been built on discipline, accountability, and conditioning. Johnson highlighted the environment as something that could help reset Morant’s trajectory.
Miami has struggled for consistency this season and currently sits ninth in the Eastern Conference at 39-35, with questions surrounding its long-term roster direction. Johnson expects changes this offseason, with Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro likely central to any retooling.
The Memphis Grizzlies are approaching a pivotal offseason, and the conversation goes far beyond their current scenario.
With playoff hopes gone and a likely top-eight pick in hand, Memphis has a chance to reshape its future. That naturally brings attention back to Ja Morant, not necessarily as a player to replace, but as a centerpiece whose long-term fit may need reevaluation.
However, the recent draft performances have only added to that discussion. As per Fansided’s recent reporting, Illinois freshman Keaton Wagler, who stood out in a Sweet Sixteen win over Houston, has emerged as a potential target.
While he does not mirror Morant’s explosiveness, his profile offers a different approach. He plays with control, values possessions, and impacts multiple areas of the game.
After struggling early, he responded with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and strong defensive activity, showing composure against one of the most physical teams in college basketball.
For Memphis, that could unlock an ultimate option to look for. The current roster has leaned heavily on athleticism and shot creation. Adding a more balanced, cerebral guard could shift the identity.
That said, with multiple draft picks and flexibility ahead, the Grizzlies are in a position to think bigger, better, and beyond Morant.
However, the question is whether they are ready to.
