Former NBA Star Shawn Kemp Pleads Guilty

Ex All-NBA star Shawn Kemp has reportedly reached a plea deal in his latest run-in with the law.

According to prosecutors, Kemp, who played 14 years in the Association with the Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers and Orlando Magic, pled guilty to second-degree assault in connection to a 2023 parking lot shooting in Tacoma, WA.

Authorities were initially seeking a first-degree charge after alleging Kemp fired a gun in the March '23 dispute — something the six-time All-Star pleaded not guilty to stating that his actions were in "self-defense" and "reasonable and legally justified." Now he's due back in court in August for sentencing.

It's not clear at this time what kind of punishment the former Sonic could be facing. But prosecutors said Tuesday, "the plea agreement between the parties is for an open sentencing recommendation meaning each side is free to make its own recommendation to the judge at the sentencing hearing."

"Reign Man" was one of the most exciting players of the '90s with his otherworldly athleticism and one of the NBA's best power forwards at his peak. However, off-court issues led to a sharp decline in his play and resulted in his career coming to an unceremonious end in 2003.

Kemp's battles with substance abuse and weight control were well-documented in the latter part of his time in pro basketball. But it looked as though he had mostly put his legal troubles behind him in the last 10+ years.

Kemp is probably best known for his high-flying dunks and helping lead Seattle to the NBA Finals in 1995-96 against the 72-10 Chicago Bulls. It's not known if jail time is on the table for the former first-round pick.
