Former Pacers pick who followed Shaquille O’Neal produces 10-assist performance for Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota Timberwolves’ 24-year-old shooting guard flaunts terrific playmaking skills in the 2025 NBA Summer League.

The Minnesota Timberwolves concluded their 2025 NBA Summer League campaign with a 104-101 loss at the hands of the Houston Rockets.

It was the team’s sole loss in the competition as they missed out on reaching the Semifinals of the Las Vegas Summer League.

Coming back to the Timberwolves’ three-point loss against the Rockets, Tristen Newton made headlines, thanks to a phenomenal all-around performance.

Tristen Newton records a 10-assist double-double vs the Rockets

Newton was originally selected by the Indiana Pacers with the 49th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. However, the Pacers parted ways with him after just five appearances.

Newton then joined the Timberwolves, albeit being restricted to just three appearances in the 2024-25 NBA season.

However, Newton has certainly sent an alert about his growth to head coach Chris Finch with a dominant double-double vs the Rockets.

To be precise, Newton finished the night with a game-high 24 points to his name. Additionally, he also had 5 rebounds, 10 assists, and 3 steals in 33 minutes of playing time.

Being a shooting guard, Newton dishing out 10 assists is an incredible feat, one that could help him earn more minutes during the regular season.

Tristen Newton followed Shaquille O’Neal during his NCAA career

Unlike many top picks in NBA drafts, Newton enjoyed an extended spell in the NCAA as he played five seasons.

During his stint, Newton averaged a solid 12.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. While Newton started his journey with East Carolina, he transferred to UConn for his final two years in college.

Playing for a power conference, Newton made a name for himself and also won an NCAA championship in 2024. Additionally, Newton recorded four triple-doubles during his stay with the Huskies.

It marked the most triple-doubles by a power conference player since Shaquille O’Neal. The Diesel had six triple-doubles to his name during his three-year (1989-92) stint with LSU.
