Former Tennessee Vols star Dalton Knecht gets a huge gift thanks to LeBron James

It feels like former Tennessee Vols basketball guard Dalton Knecht has lived a lifetime in the NBA, despite the fact that he's entering his second season in the league.

Knecht, a first round selection by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2024 NBA Draft, burst onto the scene as a rookie last season, scoring a career high 37 points in just his 14th game.

The former Vol was traded to the Charlotte Hornets a couple of months later. Knecht, however, was returned to Los Angeles when the trade was rescinded.

After returning to the Lakers, Knecht's playing time was sporadic (he only played four minutes total in the Lakers' loss in the first round of the playoffs to the Minnesota Timberwolves).

The Lakers, unsurprisingly, wouldn't mind trading Knecht (again).

Knecht, however, struggled during Summer League action, and he's been inconsistent during the preseason.

Knecht is reportedly viewed around the NBA as a "negative asset" for the Lakers right now.

The former Vol, though, will have a big opportunity to change the narrative when the regular season gets underway later this month.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, LeBron James isn't expected to return to the Lakers' lineup until mid November at the earliest.

James is dealing with sciatica on his right side.

With James expected to miss the first 15ish games of the season, it'll open up some playing time for Knecht.

This is a massive opportunity for Knecht. If he plays well in those 15 or so games, it could lead to another team trading for the former Tennessee standout (which is the best thing that could happen for Knecht's career). But if he struggles, it could lead to a lost season for Knecht.

James' absence is a gift for Knecht. But it'll be up to Knecht to seize the opportunity.
