There has been a lot, a lot of speculation about where LeBron James should and could go. However, after the Los Angeles Lakers were sent home by the Oklahoma City Thunder, Gary Payton believes LeBron could make a stunning move out of LA.

According to Payton, the Lakers’ star forward could go to the Golden State Warriors if he decides not to remain with Los Angeles this offseason.

Following the Lakers’ Game 4 loss, speculation surrounding James’ future immediately intensified. Retirement, a return to Cleveland, and another run in Los Angeles have all surfaced as possibilities. But Payton believes Golden State is the most realistic landing spot if James leaves.

Speaking on the Nightcap podcast, the Hall of Famer confidently predicted that James would avoid returning to the Eastern Conference late in his career.

“I don’t think he’s gonna come to the East because that’s gonna be a little toll for them to go back and forth,” he said. “There’s a good shot if he leaves, he’s going to Golden State. I’m telling you he’s coming to Golden State if he leaves.”

Rumors have long connected the Warriors to James in league speculation, especially given his close relationship with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. With Golden State still trying to maximize Curry’s remaining championship window, another aggressive veteran move would align with the franchise’s urgency.

Even at 41, James continues to perform at an elite level. In the Lakers’ elimination loss, he posted 24 points and 12 rebounds while recording his 20th career 20-point double-double in an elimination game, tying Wilt Chamberlain for the most in NBA history.

What Future Looks Like For LeBron James?

At 41, James remains remarkably productive, but the playoffs also revealed a new reality. However, injuries forced him back into a primary offensive role against Oklahoma City, and the physical burden of carrying a contender at this stage became evident.

That leaves several intriguing possibilities. A return to the Lakers still feels most likely, especially given his family ties, business interests, and Bronny James’ presence in Los Angeles.

But roster construction remains complicated if James expects another massive salary while the franchise also prepares to commit long-term money to Doncic and Reaves.

The Warriors continue to loom as the most fascinating basketball fit. Pairing James with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Steve Kerr would instantly create one final superteam built around veteran brilliance and championship urgency.

The Cleveland Cavaliers also remain emotionally compelling. A farewell run in Cleveland alongside Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley would complete a storybook career arc.

Other speculative fits like the New York Knicks or even the Denver Nuggets sound dramatic, but they highlight how unusual this moment is.
