Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks were on cloud nine after winning the NBA championship in 2021, but things haven't gone according to plan since. The Bucks lost in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 2022 and have been knocked out in the first round in each of their last three trips to the postseason.
The latest exit was in five games to the Indiana Pacers, and that series could prove to be Antetokounmpo's last with the franchise. Following that exit, ESPN's Shams Charania reported that for the first time in Antetokounmpo's career, he was open-minded about exploring whether it was in his best interests to stay with the Bucks.
Antetokounmpo has been with the Bucks for 12 seasons after they drafted him with the 15th pick of the 2013 NBA Draft. A parting of ways appears to be finally on the cards this offseason, but there has been no word yet about a trade request being handed in.
That might change soon, though. Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus reports that many around the league feel a trade demand from Antetokounmpo is inevitable. NBA agents also expect the nine-time All-Star to try to control where he ends up.
"Several agents polled at the recent NBA combine in Chicago believe the former NBA MVP will direct the Bucks to send him to his preferred location, whatever that might be. The closer he gets to the end of his contract, the greater his power to dissuade other suitors."
Antetokounmpo, who averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.2 blocks per game in 2024-25, is under contract through 2028. The 30-year-old has a $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season, so he can hit free agency as early as 2027.
