There may not be a more beloved figure in Wisconsin sports today than Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. Following the Green Bay Packers trade of Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, Giannis became the current longest-tenured athlete playing for a Wisconsin-based team.

The 2023-24 season will mark the two-time NBA MVP’s 11th season in Milwaukee. Following the Bucks’ trade for Damian Lillard, there is optimism that there will be many more years to follow.

Despite being in Wisconsin for so long, Giannis just recently tried one of the state’s staple foods: a brat. The video of his first foray into the world of Wisconsin sausage has gone viral, and not just for his reaction to the local delicacy.

Everyone who knows anything about Giannis knows that he was born in Athens, Greece. His parents are from Nigeria, but he brought his entire family over to live with him in Wisconsin after he made it in the NBA. While they still spend time in Greece each summer, Giannis no longer considers that the place where he’s from.

That honor goes to Milwaukee, Wisconsin:

In the video, Giannis explains to someone off camera that:

“A lot of people don’t know, but when I go to Greece, or when they ask me here in the States ‘Where are you from?’ I don’t tell them ‘Greece.’ I tell them, ‘Milwaukee, Wisconsin.'”

Giannis has long professed his love for the city of Milwaukee, and to hear him say that he considers it his hometown is a testament to how endearing the city can be.

That being said, what kind of people has Giannis surrounded himself with that did not introduce him to brats until he had been in Wisconsin for over a decade?

As one might have guessed, the reactions from fans to Giannis’ latest video were extremely positive:

As one can see, fans are confident that Giannis will end up signing another extension (or two) and stay in Milwaukee for his entire career. There is also a humorous concern over who failed to give Giannis a brat just once in the past 10 years.

There is certainly a special bond between the future Hall of Famer and the city of Milwaukee. Videos like this further prove that Giannis was born to play in Wisconsin.

Perhaps that is why he calls it his new hometown.
