With the Los Angeles Lakers recently struggling, many basketball analysts have started to turn their attention to the team. That’s not entirely surprising because LA is one of the biggest markets in basketball. After all, they also have Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves on the roster. They should be one of the top teams this season, right?

Wrong. After LeBron came back to the lineup, LA struggled. Add to the fact that Austin Reaves got injured, their situation got worse. Reaves will have a player option next season, and a lowly Western Conference team is waiting to pounce on the opportunity to pry him away from Los Angeles. Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas also chimed in with AR’s current situation and believes the Lakers are in a tough position to retain their star.

“Austin Reaves is the most important person to the Lakers’ future. He’s the biggest asset that people want. If you really want this, you will [overpay] us for. If you give him 240 [million], you can probably set back [the Lakers] for ten years. His contract, plus rebuilding…because there’s nobody in this league that’s gonna give you 240 as a second option,” per Gilbert Arenas on his show.

This is a good take from Arenas. Most of the time, he’s just spitting nonsense, but this one’s on point – surprisingly. Austin Reaves has never made an All-Star team. He’s not even been selected to any All-NBA teams. Is he truly the number one option for another team besides LA?

Lakers Rejected A Lot Of Trade Offers For Austin Reaves

There’s no doubt that the Los Angeles Lakers are gearing up for a future sans LeBron James. Keeping him happy isn’t part of their long-term plans. They have Doncic and Reaves on the roster. Those two are enough to propel them to title contention.

But a lot of teams view Austin Reaves as a centerpiece of their rebuild. And that won’t stop them from calling Rob Pelinka about LA’s asking price for their young star. However, despite the interest surrounding AR, LA has declined at least 20 inquiries over the past year.

But hey, nobody is deemed untradable in today’s game. Should Giannis become available, Pelinka would trade Reaves in a heartbeat.
