San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is touted to be a top contender for the 2025-26 NBA MVP award.
Winning the regular-season MVP award is the easiest litmus test for the talent of an NBA superstar. OKC Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander passed that test last season.
While there’s a chance that SGA wins back-to-back NBA MVP awards, he will likely face heavy competition from other stars.
The list includes San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama, who is preparing for the third NBA season of his career.
Over the last two seasons, Wembanyama has shown immense growth as the 21-year-old is already considered one of the most talented players in the NBA.
Evidently, Wembanyama is expected to lead the Spurs to a playoff berth this season. But can he also win the MVP award in Year 3 of his career? Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas shared his two cents on the same.
“Because we know how dominant he was defensively, he’s above everybody else in that category,” Arenas said of Wembanyama’s defense.
He added: “On this side, if he’s averaging 25-27 and 10-12, rebounds, blocks, while being the Defensive Player of the Year and all of that, and they’re winning games, oh yes, he can win.
“I saw he worked out with Hakeem. I like it.”
In simple terms, it will come down to Wembanyama’s performance on the offensive end of the floor, as Arenas already sees the Spurs star as the best defender in the league.
Wembanyama went through an extended offseason after suffering a season-ending injury last campaign.
The 7’4″ French star used this time to work out with former NBA stars – Kevin Garnett and Hakeem Olajuwon.
As a result, Wembanyama has learned Garnett and Olajuwon’s best qualities and put the league on notice ahead of the 2025-26 season.
In fact, KG admitted that other NBA players also reached out to him after seeing his viral workout with Wembanyama.
Keeping the above-mentioned points in mind, Wembanyama indeed seems destined to succeed this season and possibly win the NBA MVP award too.
