Talk about tanking and count the Golden State Warriors in. While the Bay Area team is approaching a defining offseason, an unexpected twist could reshape their entire trajectory. It all comes down to one factor, and it has to be Stephen Curry’s availability.
With the franchise star still sidelined, Golden State finds itself drifting closer to the lottery than contention. However, currently holding the 11th-worst record, the Warriors have roughly a 9.4 percent chance of landing a top-four pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Not overwhelming, but far from irrelevant.
And if Stephen Curry remains out, those odds only become more meaningful. This is where the franchise faces a delicate balancing act. On one side is the urgency to compete while their generational superstar is still playing at an elite level.

On the other hand is the reality of a roster that has struggled with injuries after injuries, inconsistency, and depth.
Some around the league believe the logical move would be to lean into the slide. A higher pick could inject much-needed youth into an aging core. It is the kind of opportunity that rarely presents itself for a team still hovering around playoff contention.
With everything said and done, the parts and parcels of the transaction could not be ignored.
The Warriors have consistently maintained that their priority is to win now, not pivot toward a rebuild. Shutting down Curry for lottery positioning would contradict that philosophy and potentially strain the relationship with the face of the franchise.
At the same time, the front office is already being linked to major offseason moves, from Kawhi Leonard to other superstar targets.
The Golden State Warriors are heading into the offseason with a clear priority to maximize their remaining championship window.
With injuries exposing flaws in depth and consistency more than ever, the front office is expected to be aggressive. One key asset they could use is their potential lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Instead of developing a young prospect, Golden State may look to trade that pick for immediate help. A proposed deal for Michael Porter Jr. could be a fitting approach, as Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley reported.
The scoring forward would bring size, shooting, and offensive support alongside Stephen Curry and the veteran core. With all that box-checking, the move would come dirt cheap.
Giving up a first-round pick, along with players like Kristaps Porzingis and Brandin Podziemski, would be a clear win-now gamble. It would also mean sacrificing youth for short-term gains.
That is the risk the Warriors must weigh, or just wait and let things turn themselves.
