In a crucial game for the Golden State Warriors as they pursue a higher position in the play-in tournament this season, they snapped their 5-game losing streak with a high-scoring 125-117 win over the Washington Wizards on Monday night.
Yes, you read that correctly, it was the De’Anthony Melton and Kristaps Porzingis show in the United States capital city tonight, as each player had themselves a magnificent game to lift the Warriors to the win. Porzingis would finish with a team-high 30 points and would notch 3 blocks and 2 steals off the bench, with Melton adding in 27 points in just 27 minutes of playing time.
This was just the 5th game that Porzingis has played for the Warriors since the NBA trade deadline last month, as Golden State has been carefully managing him due to a previous calf injury, and a persistent and mysterious illness ailing the veteran center. Speaking of injuries, Warriors’ legend Draymond Green had a solid game in his return to the starting lineup, as he finished with 5 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists in the win. Green had missed the previous two games for Golden State due to lower back injury management.
The Warriors came out of the gates hot on offense, as they pounced on the Wizards with a 17-point lead early in the second quarter. Unlike the Warriors’ previous game against the New York Knicks the night before, Golden State would not relinquish that early lead this time around. Much of the reason for the Warriors’ success on offense came from their ability to attack the paint at will, as they scored 68 points from close range in the win.
After taking home an Oscar on Sunday night as the executive producer for the award-winning documentary “All the Empty Rooms”, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr continued to pile on the accolades on Monday. Golden State’s win over the Wizards marked the 600th regular season win in Kerr’s coaching career, becoming just the 28th coach in NBA history to reach that impressive milestone.
Just when it seemed Young had finally found his stride for the first time since joining the Wizards, another injury to the All-Star guard has put a pin in that. Young would go down in the third quarter after colliding with teammate Will Richard while navigating a screen. The Wizards would quickly sub Young out of the game before ruling him out for the remainder of the contest with a right quad contusion. Young had posted his best game as a Wizard prior to the injury, as he notched 21 points and 5 assists in 21 minutes prior to the injury.
While the injury to Young essentially halted a potential comeback by the Wizards, the offense for Washington was still very effective in the loss. The Wizards would finish the game shooting an efficient 51% from the field, and having 6 players score in double figures in the game, with 3 of those players scoring over 21 points as well.
Both Bilal Coulibaly and Will Riley would serve as the focal point of the Wizards’ offensive attack in tonight’s game. Coulibaly would score 21 points and grab 8 rebounds, while Riley would continue his impressive play by knocking down 4 threes to finish with 21 points. Riley has seen a noticeable uptick in his production over the past month, as he’s averaging 13 points on 44% shooting from the floor and 33% from beyond the arc since the start of March.
While the Warriors’ hopes of getting out of the play-in tournament have been dashed with their recent losing streak, Golden State can still improve their position in the standings heading into the final stretch of the season. Following their win tonight, the Warriors remain just two games back of the Los Angeles Clippers for the 8th-place spot in the play-in. That lead could conceivably shrink further after today, as the Clippers currently trail the San Antonio Spurs by a score of 66-52 heading into halftime as of the publishing of this article.
