Former NBA star Dwyane Wade believes that Jimmy Butler’s passive approach ultimately sealed the Golden State Warriors’ fate during their second-round exit at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
“I didn’t like the way he approached the game. I know Jimmy is a pass-first guy, I know he’s about getting his teammates the ball, and he wants to see them shine. But it’s at a point where you’re getting $60M, this ain’t working. He won’t look at the basket,” Wade said on his podcast.
“I’ve seen this in a Heat Jersey. When Pat comes out a says we don’t want to give you an extension, it’s not always injury, I need to see what you’ll do in every moment. We saw Jimmy in the bubble, he was a dog. I saw Jimmy in another finals vs the Nuggets, he did the same thing he did the other night, he didn’t look at the basket!” he added.
Butler averaged 20.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game against Minnesota, but it wasn’t enough for Golden State to advance to the next round. Many felt the 35-year-old forward should’ve been more aggressive on offense, especially when Stephen Curry went down with a hamstring injury.
Jimmy Butler’s long-time agent Bernie Lee did not hold back when he heard Dwyane Wade’s harsh assessment on his client, saying that the three-time NBA champion’s podcast can “kick rocks.”
“man podcast’s can kick rocks haha. Let’s be clear, the playoffs for him started in February. 1. Took a team that was 11th got them to the 2nd round of the playoffs. 2. that finals team thats just kind of off-handedly mentioned here.. had 9 undrafted players on it..” Lee wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Before Butler arrived in February, the Golden State Warriors were 25-26. The six-time NBA All-Star helped the team finish with a 48-34 record and beat the Houston Rockets in the first round.
