The Golden State Warriors made several contract moves this weekend, with one having major implications for Jonathan Kuminga and Seth Curry.
The Golden State Warriors finally made some much-needed signings ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season. The Warriors had put their offseason on pause to try and deal with the Jonathan Kuminga situation.
Yesterday, the Warriors signed Al Horford to a multi-year contract, resolving a months-long state of limbo between the two sides.
The Warriors also signed De’Anthony Melton and Gary Payton II right after, and signed rookie Will Richard to a four-year contract.
And it appears one of these deals will have a major impact on the potential signings of Jonathan Kuminga and Seth Curry.
With the Golden State Warriors signing #56 pick Will Richard to a guaranteed contract, this puts the signing of Jonathan Kuminga and Seth Curry in jeopardy.
Specifically, the Warriors don’t have the cap room to sign Kuminga to the $75 million contract they offered him if they want to sign Seth Curry to a veteran minimum for their 15th roster spot.
Jonathan Kuminga will have to sign for $74.5 million if the Warriors want to sign Seth Curry to the veteran minimum contract with a $2.3 million cap hit.
This is why the Warriors’ signing Will Richard to a guaranteed contract is so confusing. They had another two-way slot available, and Richard, being a second-round pick, would have fit in quite well.
At the reported 3yr/$75.2M offer JK would come in at a $23.2M salary for 25/26, which would not give them the requisite apron space to sign a 15th player on the minimum.

He would have to sign for at most 3yr/$74.5M for there to be space for Seth Curry on a vet min.
While the Warriors might find themselves in a difficult position, there is a simple solution to their current predicament.
Kuminga is willing to help the Warriors financially by taking less money. However, his one demand has stayed the same – a player option for his final season.
The Golden State Warriors know that they need to keep their options open with Kuminga. And adding a player option to his contract doesn’t make him any less tradeable.
As things stand, Kuminga is set to miss the Warriors’ media day because of their stalled contract negotiations. Hopefully, they resolve things before the October 1st deadline.
