The Golden State Warriors could be closing in on a replacement for Kevon Looney.
Amid their desire to add a new starting center, the Golden State Warriors have lost one of the veterans on their roster.
Kevon Looney agreed a deal to sign with the New Orleans Pelicans, where he rejoins his former Warriors teammate Jordan Poole, recently traded to the team.
Fortunately the Warriors have a replacement in mind already, one who is an even more recent title winner.
The Golden State Warriors are pushing for a move to sign Boston Celtics veteran Al Horford.
Speaking to The Hoop Collective, Brian Windhorst updated: “Al Horford is almost certainly going to sign elsewhere, it looks like he’s going to sign with the Warriors.”
The Celtics are preparing for Horford’s departure, signing Milwaukee Bucks center Luka Garza in free agency.
Horford was a champion with the Boston Celtics in 2024. He is currently 39-years-old, and cannot afford to spend his final year or two as part of a rebuild.
A move to sign with the Warriors, already on a short window with Draymond Green and Stephen Curry, plus Jimmy Butler, could be an ideal fit.
Golden State Warriors head coach and Team USA champion Steve Kerr is on record praising Al Horford.
Speaking to the Boston Globe in 2019, Kerr labelled Horford, the ‘perfect modern-day center’.
He added, via Nicole Yang: “He can protect the rim. He can run dribble handoffs and step out to the three-point line. He can put the ball on the floor. He’s a really good passer. That means you have to guard the entire floor.”
Horford may be in the final stages of his career, but he can still contribute. It is just 12 months since he won the NBA title.
This past season he played 27.7 minutes per game during the regular season, across a total of 60 games.
