Grading the Detroit Pistons’ Free Agency So Far

After a historic turnaround last season, the Detroit Pistons entered the NBA offseason looking to upgrade their roster and compete for a top seed in the weakened Eastern Conference next season.

Of course, the Pistons were the surprise team in the NBA last season as they went from being the worst team in the league to making the playoffs thanks to a breakout season by Cade Cunningham.

Now the Pistons are looking to upgrade their roster around Cunningham along with their other key players in Tobias Harris, Ausar Thompson and Jalen Duren and they will also get back Jaden Ivey to start next season after he suffered a broken leg last season.

Detroit did enter the summer with some key players being unrestricted free agents as they lost Dennis Schroder to a sign-and-trade with the Sacramento Kings while Tim Hardaway Jr. signed with the Denver Nuggets.

The Pistons were able to re-sign Paul Reed and they also upgraded their depth by adding Caris LeVert and also Duncan Robinson, who they received via a sign-and-trade with the Miami Heat that saw Detroit send Simone Fontecchio to Miami.

Pistons' Free Agency Grade: B

With these moves, the Pistons earned a B free agency grade as they did a solid job of adding players to replace the ones that departed in free agency.

Of course, losing both Schroder and Hardaway Jr. will have an impact on the Pistons next season but they were able to replace them with LeVert and Robinson.

For LeVert, he is a great scorer who should bring a spark off Detroit’s bench next season and he is also an underrated defender.

Robinson will be a massive upgrade to their offense, primarily their three-point shooting, as he could end up being the replacement for Malik Beasley if he leaves in free agency.

Detroit does still have some other areas of need they need to address before the start of next season but they have done a good job thus far of adding to their roster.
