Grading the Sacramento Kings’ Free Agency So Far

The Sacramento Kings entered the NBA offseason with a decision to make as they could have elected to either begin a rebuild or upgrade their roster and compete for a playoff spot next season.

Sacramento chose to upgrade their roster and they started doing so in the 2025 NBA Draft where they traded into the first round to select Nique Clifford and then drafted Maxime Raynaud in the second round.

They then made a trade with the Denver Nuggets to start off free agency as they sent Jonas Valanciunas to Denver for Dario Saric.

Entering free agency, the Kings had one position in mind that they needed to upgrade and that would be the point guard position.

Of course, the Kings struggled at the point guard position in the second half of last season after trading De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs at the trade deadline.

Due to this, the Kings were reportedly targeting both Russell Westbrook and Dennis Schroder and they were able to land Schroder via a sign-and-trade with the Detroit Pistons.

Kings' Free Agency Grade: C+

With this move, the Kings earned a C+ free agency grade as they were able to upgrade their point guard position, though they did give Schroder a large contract.

Sacramento signed Schroder to a three-year, $44.4 million contract, which is a large contract for a 32-year-old guard who has spent much of his career as a backup point guard.

Despite this, adding Schroder was a massive upgrade to their point guard position as he will give the Kings another solid scorer and playmaker in their starting lineup.

With their new-look starting lineup of Schroder, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Keegan Murray and Domantas Sabonis, the Kings have hopes of reaching the playoffs next season and they could still make more moves this summer.

The Kings have been linked to Jonathan Kuminga and both DeRozan and Malik Monk have been in trade rumors.

Because of this, Sacramento may look to make more upgrades this offseason as they try to bounce back after a disappointing season last year.
