Grayson Allen was left stunned to see Phoenix Suns rookie Khaman Maluach showcasing his basketball IQ at practice.

As the Phoenix Suns look to bounce back from their failed superteam experiment, they will rely on the young crop of stars they’ve brought in this season.

The Suns traded Kevin Durant to the Rockets for a fairly big haul, which included Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and the #10 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

With that pick, the Suns landed Khaman Maluach, the impressive Duke center. So far, Maluach is expected to be the team’s backup center behind newly acquired Suns center Mark Williams.

But he might not be on the bench for long, especially if what Grayson Allen said about him carries into his performances on the court.

Grayson Allen says Khaman Maluach is brilliant at orchestrating plays

Grayson Allen spoke to reporters ahead of the Phoenix Suns’ trip to Macau for the NBA preseason. When discussing the younger members on the roster, he praised the centers for their competition.

In particular, Allen praised Khaman Maluach for the way he was orchestrating the defense and making sure he consistently communicated with the side.

“He talks nonstop on the court. Like he’s commanding the defense, calling out coverages, constantly talking.

“For a rookie, let alone a 19-year-old guy, to come into a gym and do that first day of training camp is impressive. He’s already ready in that aspect.”

Khaman Maluach got to play on what many believe will be remembered as an iconic Duke squad with Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel. So that experience must have helped him get to this level.

Phoenix Suns will be patient when developing Khaman Maluach

While Khaman Maluach is showing signs of great potential, the Phoenix Suns have no intention of rushing him into the spotlight just yet.

Maluach is immensely talented, but is still quite green. He is going to need some time to adapt to the NBA game and develop his own playing style within the league.

Perhaps this season can allow him to understand what it takes to thrive in the NBA and understand the finer points of the game at the highest level.

Furthermore, playing under two centers like Nick Richards and Mark Williams, the latter also being a Duke alumnus like him, will give him the mentorship he needs to improve.
