Grant Hill meant a lot to the Detroit Pistons. In an era that featured predominantly bad basketball in Detroit, Hill, who the Pistons snagged with the third overall pick in the 1994 NBA draft, was a bright spot.
The Pistons drafted Cade Cunningham No. 1 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft to be a Hill-like player for the franchise. They drafted him to be a bright spot and a leader to bring the team out of the doldrums and back to NBA glory.
Cunningham averaged 17.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists for the Pistons as a rookie and largely looked like "the guy" many expected him to be. He wasn't Rookie of the Year. He gained the respect of every superstar he squared off with despite playing on a bad team, and he put down the foundation of greatness for what looks like an exciting squad moving forward.
The Pistons are on the come-up, and Cunningham is the main piece of that puzzle.
Cunningham has superstar potential, and it will be interesting to see if and when he reaches that potential. Speaking of, Hill was perhaps Detroit's last superstar, so comparisons between Cunningham and Hill are warranted.
Anthony, former player turned talking head, can see an even greater comparison between the two players, though. Not only are they the faces of the Detroit franchise, but their playing style is similar as well.
Mike Curtis of the Detroit News passed on some analysis from Anthony with a subsequent reaction from Cunningham.
Greg Anthony tells Cade Cunningham he's Grant Hill with a jump shot.

Cunningham says "It's an honor" and "I think even today, people my age are sleep on Grant Hill as far as what he was in basketball."
If Cunningham can have a Hill-like impact on the NBA, minus the injuries, the Pistons will be thrilled.
Hill was a seven-time All-Star (five times representing Detroit) and a Hall of Famer. He averaged 21.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game in his six seasons spent with the Pistons.
Detroit traded Hill to the Orlando Magic in a deal that brought the franchise Ben Wallace, so all is well that ended well for the Pistons.
