Gregg Popovich becomes first coach in NBA history with 1,500 wins

Gregg Popovich is rapidly approaching the all-time record for regular-season wins by an NBA coach, but thanks to his success in the postseason, he already stands alone in a similar category.

With the Spurs' 131-106 win over the Rockets on Friday night, Popovich became the first coach in NBA history to win 1,500 games across the regular season and postseason. He now sits five regular-season wins back of Don Nelson's all-time record (1,335).

Leading the charge for San Antonio was Keldon Johnson, who led all scorers with 28 points while reeling in seven rebounds as well. Jakob Poeltl finished with 21 points and 10 boards, while Dejounte Murray nearly logged another triple-double with 19 rebounds, seven rebounds and 11 assists along with four steals.

Popovich has been the Spurs' head coach since 1996. He's easily established himself as one of the greatest to ever do it in that time, winning five NBA championships, three Coach of the Year awards and an Olympic gold medal.

San Antonio is now 20-34 on the season, but it is within striking distance of the play-in tournament in the Western Conference.
