Grizzlies Announce Ja Morant News on Thursday

The Memphis Grizzlies entered the 2025–26 NBA season without high expectations following significant roster changes, but the year has still not gone according to plan.

A major factor has been the struggles of point guard Ja Morant, who has been extremely inefficient to start the year in what is now his seventh season with the organization.

His name has already surfaced in trade rumors as Memphis weighs whether moving on and committing fully to a rebuild might be the best course of action.

Through his first 18 games this season, the 26-year-old point guard has averaged 19.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 7.6 assists while shooting just 40.1% from the field and 20.8% from 3-point range.

Those numbers reflect a sharp decline from his usual production and have raised concerns about his ability to carry the offense.

Compounding the issue, Morant has dealt with multiple injuries that have forced him to miss time. In late 2025, he was sidelined with a Grade 1 right calf strain that cost him two weeks in November, followed by a left ankle sprain.

Earlier in the season, he also served a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. Unfortunately, his right calf problems appear to have resurfaced.

On Saturday, the Grizzlies announced their injury report ahead of Sunday’s rematch with the Los Angeles Lakers, listing Morant as questionable with a right calf contusion.

Memphis is looking to break its three-game losing streak on Sunday and, despite Morant’s inconsistency, the team still hopes to see him on the floor. During the most recent loss to the Lakers, Morant collected 16 points and 11 assists as he looks to turn his season around.

When at the peak of his powers, Morant is one of the league’s most exciting players thanks to his explosive athleticism, fearless drives and highlight-reel finishes.

His career achievements already include two All-Star selections, the 2019–20 Rookie of the Year, the 2021–22 Most Improved Player and a 2021–22 All-NBA honor.

For a Grizzlies team already battling inconsistency, Morant’s health looms as a decisive factor in whether they can stabilize or slide further toward a rebuild.
