The expected has become reality with Jordan Hawkins and the Grizzlies.

Memphis announced that it has waived Hawkins, the former lottery pick acquired from the Pelicans in a trade last month. ESPN previously reported that the sides had mutually agreed to part ways, allowing Hawkins to seek another opportunity. Now we’ll find out where that opportunity might be.

Hawkins, 24, was the No. 14 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft after helping UConn win a national championship. His shooting was considered his calling card, but he never quite established himself as a consistent NBA rotation piece in New Orleans.

He averaged 9.2 points over his first two seasons before slipping to 5.1 points in 51 appearances last year. Hawkins shot 34.8 percent from three in each of his three NBA seasons.

There should be some interest. Previous reports indicated multiple teams were keeping an eye on Hawkins in the event Memphis cut him loose, although roster spots aren’t exactly plentiful this close to opening night.

The Grizzlies will eat Hawkins’ roughly $7 million salary, but they have more than enough financial breathing room to do so.

Memphis isn’t done making decisions, either. The Grizzlies still have a roster crunch to solve before the regular season, with Micah Peavy and Kris Murray among the other players whose spots could be in jeopardy.
