The Hawks are in position to get the Kings’ first-round pick, as it’s top-12 protected. Sacrementio needs to be no worse than tenth in the Western Conference. Currently, they sit ninth. Along with that, Atlanta will also get the Lakers first round selection, which will be towards the end of the first round.
In the latest ESPN mock draft, the Hawks are selecting 14th and 25th. If possible, I’d love for Landry Fields to package both picks and move up the draft board, but ESPN has Atlanta standing pat and drafting a potential Trae Young backup in Jase Richardson.
“Richardson turned the corner in a major way over the second half of the Spartans’ season, finding another notch with his aggressiveness and productivity while shouldering greater offensive responsibility efficiently as a starter. His pace, skill level, feel for the game and shotmaking prowess give him an outstanding framework at 19 years old, especially with his defensive intensity.
A team such as the Hawks could be interested in Richardson’s winning qualities and upside.”
Richardson is a combo guard with a developed midrange game and solid feel in the pick-and-roll. Being able to create, whether it’s facilitating or scoring, out of the pick-and-roll is important for any Trae Young backup. More importantly, he’s a very willing defender, even if he lacks ideal size.
With their second pick in the first round, the Hawks draft Nique Clifford out of Colorado State.
“After testing the draft last season and then returning to school, Clifford’s breakout super-senior season at Colorado State elevated him into the first-round picture. His all-around production, solid shooting, and impact on both ends bode well for his chances at getting useful rookie minutes.
A team such as the Hawks, who are aiming to compete, would likely value his versatility and effort as a rebounder and defender who can also knock down open shots and make plays for teammates. Clifford’s age (23) might work against him, but the dearth of experienced college wings in this class makes him a valid target in this range.”
The Hawks need to improve the bench, and they need more guys like Dyson Daniels and Zaccharie Risacher — winning players. Wherever they get it, it doesn’t matter. The club needs to surround Trae Young with length, defense, and shooting. The superstar point guard will be able to provide the rest.
