The 56-year-old served as the Hawks interim head coach after the franchise fired Lloyd Pierce following a 14-20 start. The move turned out to be great for Atlanta as McMillan led the team to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2015. The Hawks eventually fell to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games.
Atlanta finished fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 41-31 record. McMillan went 27-11 and 10-8 in the playoffs.
This will be McMillan's fourth full-time head coaching job. He previously coached the Seattle SuperSonics, Portland Trail Blazers and Indiana Pacers, going 688-599 over 20 seasons.
