On Monday afternoon, the Atlanta Hawks locked up one of their cornerstone pieces, signing Dyson Daniels to a four-year, $100 million contract extension, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Acquired in the deal that sent Dejounte Murray to New Orleans last offseason, Daniels quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier perimeter defenders, finishing second in the Defensive Player of the Year voting. Just as impressive, he made major strides offensively, showing growth as both a scorer and facilitator. Daniels shot nearly 50% from the field, 34% from three, and averaged 4.4 assists per game — all career highs.

At just 22 years old, Daniels is an ideal backcourt partner for Trae Young, providing the defensive versatility and playmaking balance the Hawks have long sought. Locking him in at $25 million annually could end up being one of the better bargains in the league.

In one offseason, general manager Onsi Saleh has completely transformed the outlook of the Hawks organization. Atlanta now has a roster built to compete in a wide-open Eastern Conference today while maintaining flexibility for the future.
