Hawks release former NBA lottery pick

The Atlanta Hawks are giving up on a former NBA lottery pick with the season right around the corner.

The Hawks on Friday waived guard Devin Carter, a 2024 lottery pick. Carter had been acquired by the Hawks in a minor deal in June.

Carter was originally drafted by the Sacramento Kings with the No. 13 overall selection in the 2024 draft. After playing a limited role as a rookie, the Providence product played in 38 games, where he averaged 8.9 points in 18.4 minutes per game.

The Kings thought enough of Carter to exercise his third-year option before the start of last season, but were clearly unmoved by his performances last season.

While the Hawks are the team that ultimately cut Carter, he will go down as another Sacramento draft bust. There is a reason that few around the NBA have a very high opinion of the organization.
