The Hawks have officially signed second-year forward Jacob Toppin to fill their open two-way slot, as relayed by Lauren L. Williams of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Toppin, who became a free agent after the Knicks waived him on Sunday, will join the Hawks after a limited role with New York this season. The 6-foot-9 forward appeared in 16 games, averaging just 0.4 points and 0.7 rebounds in 3.1 minutes per contest.
However, Toppin impressed in the NBA G League with the Westchester Knicks, where he posted averages of 25.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 0.8 blocks, and 0.7 steals over 11 regular-season games.
Undrafted out of Kentucky in 2023, Toppin spent much of last season on a two-way contract with the Knicks and was re-signed to another two-way deal in August. He is eligible to be active for up to 12 games for the remainder of the Hawks’ regular season.
Atlanta created the opportunity for Toppin by promoting Dominick Barlow to the 15-man roster on a standard two-year contract, a move that opened a spot after the termination of Kevon Harris’ 10-day deal.
Tuesday marks the deadline for NBA teams to sign two-way players.
The Hawks (28-33) entering Tuesday’s home game against the Bucks in ninth in the Eastern Conference standings, a half-game back of the Magic.
