Less than 24 hours removed from sending their star forward Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors, the Miami Heat were not through making moves.
On Thursday, the Heat acquired guard Davion Mitchell from the Toronto Raptors for 13-year veteran P.J. Tucker, a second-round pick and cash, per ESPN's Shams Charania.

With the loss of Butler, Mitchell, the No. 9 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, brings some versatility to the lineup. As a rookie with the Sacramento Kings, Mitchell averaged 11.5 points and 4.2 assists. Since the Raptors acquired him in a trade that took place during the 2024 NBA Draft, the 26-year-old has started a career-high 22 games.
For a team that is sitting at 25-24 and the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference as of Thursday afternoon, it is hard to say how this might play out in the long-term. However, despite Mitchell's versatility and increase in playing time with the Raptors, this does not look like an immediate solution to the team's struggles. It could, though, be the start of a rebuild with Butler gone to the Bay area.
Amazingly, this is the third time in the last five days that Tucker has been traded. He was part of a swap with forward Drew Eubanks that sent him from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Utah Jazz. As part of the Butler deal, Tucker was sent from the Jazz to the Heat. It should be interesting to see whether Tucker decides to remain with the struggling Raptors organization that is also rebuilding or potentially hit the buyout market.
While Tucker has only averaged 6.6 points and 5.4 rebounds during his career, he has been a solid role player and spent five seasons abroad following his rookie season before returning to the league in 2012.
It remains to be seen which side will benefit from this trade or if both organizations failed altogether. Considering the Heat are having difficulty finding some consistency, adding someone like Mitchell to the lineup at least gives them a young, versatile player. He has scored 10 or more points 11 times this season and posted a double-double against the Charlotte Hornets on Oct. 30, so the potential is there.
