Heat expecting Terry Rozier in camp despite uncertainty

The Heat are planning to have veteran guard Terry Rozier in camp next week, despite ongoing questions about his future, per Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald.

Rozier’s contract has been a topic of internal debate, but for now, Miami intends to start the season with him on the roster. A buyout is considered unlikely, given Rozier’s ties to a federal gambling investigation that would limit his options elsewhere.

Trading him is possible, but it would mean giving up draft capital and potentially tightening the team’s cap sheet beyond this season — something the Heat would prefer to avoid.

If Rozier does end up departing, the more realistic scenario is a straight waiver. That move would free up about $1.7 million under the tax line, since only $24.9 million of his $26.6 million salary is guaranteed for 2024-25.

The waive-and-stretch option is off the table after last month’s deadline.

In the meantime, Rozier may even see early minutes. With Tyler Herro recovering from an ankle injury, there’s at least an opening for Rozier to carve out a role — assuming he’s still around when the season tips.
