Heat keep play-in hopes alive with late 14-0 run to down 76ers

The Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers traded scoring runs all night Monday. The Heat's last big run came in crunch time and gave them hope of climbing into a top NBA play-in spot.

With the Sixers leading by four and 3:22 to go, Miami scored 14 straight points to lock up its 119-109 win. It was just its second win in nine games, but it brought it within 1.5 games of Philadelphia and the all-important seventh seed.

Bam Adebayo outdueled Joel Embiid

Joel Embiid scored 26 points Monday but shot only 10-of-25 to get there. His -18 plus/minus was distorted by the Heat's closing run, but Embiid missed three shots in the final three minutes and grabbed only seven rebounds.

Bam Adebayo nearly matched Embiid with a more efficient 23 points, shooting 5-of-11 from the field and making 12 of his 13 free throws. Since Adebayo's stunning 83-point performance, he'd shot only 34.9 percent from the floor before Monday as the Heat went 2-6. Tyler Herro had 30 points, 12 in the fourth quarter and eight during the Heat's game-clinching run.

But the key was that the Heat tightened up their slumping defense in the final minutes, stopping the 76ers on five straight possessions, with Herro's block on Paul George the biggest play.

76ers may have been exhausted

One reason the Sixers may have folded down the stretch was simply fatigue. Tyrese Maxey played 44 minutes on Monday after logging 43 minutes Saturday in his return from a three-week layoff. Embiid wore down after 34 minutes, after playing 36 on Saturday, and told reporters after the game that he was ill.

Philly has struggled to get Maxey, Embiid and George together on the floor all season, thanks to multiple injuries and George's suspension. But head coach Nick Nurse doesn't seem interested in resting his fragile Big Three, even with just two weeks to go before the playoffs.

Perhaps Nurse is trying to avoid the play-in and catch the Atlanta Hawks for sixth place — the Sixers are 1.5 games back — which would give the team at least five days of rest before the playoffs. Still, he'd do well to keep his team fresh for the fourth quarter and for the postseason.
