The biggest criticism Luka Doncic received amid the shocking trade that sent him to the Los Angeles Lakers is his lack of physical conditioning. Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison and governer Patrick Dumont spoke about it amid the trade drama. However, not everyone is convinced about what the Mavericks executives claim.
Former Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade is the latest to speak about the criticism about Doncic’s lack of conditioning. The Heat legend shut down the narrative that the five-time All-Star is out of shape.
“That don’t even compute to me,” Wade said about Doncic (30:26). “A guy at that level — when I’m hearing this narrative about him being out of shape, that doesn’t compute to me. You can’t do what you do being out of shape.”
While Doncic doesn’t boast the ideal body, he’s still able to achieve out-of-this-world numbers. On a nightly basis, the Slovenian sensation can flirt with triple-doubles while scoring at a high volume.
Despite the claim from the Mavericks that Doncic is out of shape, the star still played like an All-Star during his time with the organization. He was named to five straight All-Star selections since his sophomore season. Additionally, the 6-foot-6 guard earned five consecutive first-team All-NBA selections with the Dallas team.
During his time with the Texas-based team, Doncic averaged 28.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists. The team’s success was consistently attributed to the outstanding guard, who even guided them to the NBA Finals the previous season.
Luka Doncic played his first game for the Lakers on Monday against the Utah Jazz. Since was coming back from injury, the coaching staff was cautious not to re-aggravate his calf. The star guard didn’t play since Dec. 27 due to a left calf strain. Overall, the former Mavericks player only played for 23 minutes against the Jazz.
He started slow in the game with five points and an assist in the first quarter. However, he gradually picked up the pace and totaled his stats to 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Doncic’s efficiency wasn’t eye-popping as he didn’t shoot the basketball well.
The 25-year-old shot 35.7% from the field and 14.3% from beyond the arc. Fortunately, other players for the Lakers picked up his slack, leading to the eventual 132-113 win. LeBron James had 24 points, seven rebounds and eight assists on the night. Youngster Austin Reaves also played a big part in their victory with his 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
