Heat sharpshooter makes history at EuroBasket

Newly acquired Miami Heat forward Simone Fontecchio recorded the most points ever in a game for Italy at a FIBA EuroBasket with the 39 points he scored against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Fontecchio shot the lights out, knocking down 7-of-10 three-pointers, also chipping in eight rebounds and three assists in the team's 96-79 victory.

The 29-year-old passed 10-year NBA veteran Andrea Bargnani on Italy's all-time single-game scoring list, who scored 36 points at FIBA EuroBasket 2011.

After Italy's lead was cut to 82-77 with a little over five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Fontecchio scored eight points down the stretch to help them put the game away.

After a slow start in the first two games for Fontecchio, where he only averaged 9.0 points per game and converted 1-of-10 three-pointers and 5-of-21 shots from the field, including missing his first 10 shots, he turned things around in a big way to help Italy move to 2-1 in Group C before an important clash with Spain (also 2-1) on Sept. 2.

Fontecchio spoke about his early tournament struggles and staying positive.

"I really wasn't worried about my performance. Of course, I wasn't happy, but I knew it would come at some point, so I wasn't really stressed about it," Fontecchio said. "I was mad a little bit but it's part of the game, part of life. You cannot always score 40 points or 20 points every game. I am not a machine."

Fontecchio will try to carve out a role this upcoming season with the Heat after only averaging 5.9 points last season with the Detroit Pistons.

The Heat have to like seeing that the sharpshooter is capable of getting hot beyond the arc and having these performances.
