After a relatively quiet stretch, the situation involving Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks has taken another turn, with the Miami Heat expected to monitor developments closely.
In the Bucks’ March 15 victory over the Indiana Pacers, Giannis Antetokounmpo had to leave the game early. The veteran star limped off to the locker room for evaluation after a possible injury, and the team ultimately kept him out for the remainder of the contest. He still managed to finish with 31 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists.
Just hours before Wednesday’s slate of NBA games, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Bucks were weighing the option of sitting Giannis Antetokounmpo for the remainder of the 2025-2026 season. The plan reportedly met resistance from the former MVP.
Miami Herald reporter Barry Jackson shared his take on the Bucks-Giannis situation, highlighting that the Heat are expected to continue pursuing Antetokounmpo in the offseason.
“So the Milwaukee Bucks, wanting to enhance lottery chances and protect an asset, want to shut down Giannis and he’s refusing, as The Athletic and ESPN reported in past 30 minutes. What is keeping him from simply saying the words “It’s best we go our separate ways and in trade talks, please convey that I would only sign an extension with teams, X, Y, Z”? A year of all this nonsense because he can’t bring himself to that, which is admirable in some ways, I suppose. Heat will keep trying to acquire him this summer,” the Miami writer posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Many teams will aim to land Giannis this summer, but only one if any, will realistically succeed. The Heat gained an advantage from trade rumors circulating during the season. At first, the New York Knicks were considered the frontrunners, but that idea lost steam, leaving Miami and the Golden State Warriors as the two main teams in the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes.
Things could shift over the next few months, but the Heat are likely to remain a team to watch if the Antetokounmpo-Bucks relationship reaches a breaking point.
