Heat forward Andrew Wiggins has exercised his $30.17MM player option for the 2026/27 season, reports Jake Fischer of The Stein Line ( Twitter link ). According to Shams Charania of ESPN ( Twitter links), Wiggins and the Heat have also reached an extension agreement in conjunction with Wiggins’ opt-in.
Charania states that Wiggins will be on a three-year, $64MM deal, which indicates that he’ll be signing a new two-year extension that begins in ’27/28 and is worth roughly $34MM. The deal will include a player option for the 2028/29 season, Charania adds.
After being sent from Golden State to Miami at the 2025 trade deadline as part of the package for Jimmy Butler, Wiggins played and started 68 games during his first full season with the Heat in 2025/26. He filled up the box score by averaging 15.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.0 block in 30.3 minutes per game, posting a strong shooting line of .475/.414/.784.
A versatile, switchable swingman, Wiggins’ three-and-D skill set should make him a good fit on the wing alongside the Heat’s new star frontcourt duo of Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The decision to have Wiggins opt in and extend at a much lower number – approximately $16.5MM in 2027/28 and $17.5MM in ’28/29, tweets Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel – rather than opting out and sign a new three-year contract with a flatter structure will give the Heat additional cap relief in 2027/28 and potentially ’28/29 (if Wiggins opts in at that time). However, it still leaves the club facing a bit of a cap crunch in the short term.
As cap expert Yossi Gozlan notes (via Twitter), after taking into account Wiggins’ and Larsson’s option pickups, Dru Smith‘s contract guarantee, and Jahmir Young having his option turned down, the Heat project to operate roughly $20.5MM below their first-apron hard cap, with at least five roster spots left to fill. That will make it very difficult for Miami to bring back high-scoring free agent guard Norman Powell without clearing additional salary.
Wiggins will be able to officially sign his extension after the moratorium period ends on July 6.
