The Boston Celtics may not have defended their title this season, but that didn’t stop team owner Wyc Grousbeck from throwing a little shade at the rival New York Knicks.

Appearing on a live episode of the Club 520 podcast, Grousbeck congratulated Knicks fans for their playoff win over Boston—then immediately followed it up with a flex.

“Nice playoff win, Knicks fans, but here’s what a ring looks like,” he said, flashing his 2024 NBA Championship ring on camera.

Boston’s playoff run ended in the Eastern Conference semifinals, thanks in large part to Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury in Game 4. The star forward went down late in the game, and the Celtics couldn’t recover from the loss.

But while the Knicks pulled off the upset, they couldn’t ride that momentum much further. Indiana Pacers forward Pascal Siakam put on a show in the Conference Finals, averaging 24.8 points and 5.0 rebounds, and earned ECF MVP honors in a series win that sent the Pacers to the NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“Jayson Has a Warrior Mentality”: Boston Celtics Owner Backs Tatum After Injury

Even with the Boston Celtics’ early exit, the team’s focus is now on the long road ahead—starting with the health of Jayson Tatum, who is expected to miss the entire 2025–26 season following Achilles surgery.

Tatum suffered the injury during a heartbreaking Game 4 finish, and the Celtics quickly confirmed he would undergo surgery. According to multiple reports, recovery will keep him off the floor for the next year.

Still, Grousbeck remains confident in his franchise cornerstone.

“Jayson has a warrior mentality like the rest of his teammates,” he told The Boston Globe.

“He will work very hard to get back.”

With Tatum sidelined, Boston is already making moves. The Celtics have parted ways with Kristaps Porziņģis, Jrue Holiday, and Luke Kornet, clearing room to bring in Anfernee Simons via trade.

They also added Luka Garza and Josh Minott in free agency—two under-the-radar additions that could pay off during what’s likely to be a transitional year in Boston.

The defending champs may have fallen early this time, but Grousbeck’s ring flex suggests the mindset in Boston hasn’t changed: It’s still about banners and titles.
