The Phoenix Suns‘ No. 10 pick of the 2025 NBA draft, Khaman Maluach, has received high praise from almost everyone in the organization. At just 18, coaches, his teammates and team executives commended him for being a vocal leader, especially on the defensive end. Maluach is consistent when it comes to letting his teammates know what to do on the floor.
Fans got to see that characteristic from the Sudanese big man early in the Summer League. As a big presence on the floor, Maluach oversees what the defense should do and where his teammates are supposed to be positioned.
On Sunday, former NBA player and current assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns, DeMarre Carroll, spoke highly of the center. He talked about the good traits that Maluach has, especially for being a vocal teammate. Carroll predicted that the former Duke center could be a leader early in his professional career.
“That’s Khaman,” Carroll said. “A lot of guys gravitate towards him. I think he’s going to become a leader very quick. Just to be 18 doing that is amazing. I’m happy to see that.”
"Oh, That's Khaman"

Even his rookie teammate, Koby Brea, talked about how great a leader Maluach is.
“That’s who he is, man. That’s who he is. And I’m just glad that he’s not afraid to show and express the way he feels. He’s a very vocal guy at his age. There’s not a lot of rookies doing that,” Brea said.
On Sunday, Maluach did not play in the Suns’ 98-80 loss against the Atlanta Hawks. However, his presence on the bench played a significant role in the team and encouraged his teammates.
Like most rookies, Maluach still needs his game to be developed. The Phoenix Suns assistant coach is aware of that, but can already tell that the big man will be a great performer for the team.
“He is a great talent,” said Carroll, who is serving as the Suns’ summer league head coach. “The sky is the limit for the kid. He has learned real quick. He picked it up in training camp real quick; his communication on the back line. Him playing on both ends of the court with force, I think has been key. I expect to see really, really great things from him.”
The Suns are excited to see Maluach play with his teammates, and not just in the Summer League. With what he can bring on both ends of the floor, Phoenix believes they’ve acquired someone special.
