VJ Edgecombe has been balling for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Summer League, so much so that he has been getting a ton of praise from analysts and fans.
The Philadelphia 76ers rookie notched 28 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and one steal against the Utah Jazz, making him the fourth Top 5 pick to record at least 25 points and 10 rebounds in a Summer League match since 2017.
“Edgecombe, you watch him and he is just a wow athlete,” ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said about Edgecombe on The Hoop Collective podcast. “The turbo button, the leaping ability. I mean, he got up 27 shots, and there weren’t a lot where you said, ‘Boy, he forced that one.’ Ten rebounds. He is a high-level athlete. I mean, he might be a top 10 athlete when he steps on the board.”
“VJ Edgecombe is the fourth top 5 pick to have a 25-point, 10-rebound game in Summer League since 2017. The others? Wemby, Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum. No guarantees, but not bad company to be in,” he added.
The Philadelphia 76ers will have to play without VJ Edgecombe against the Oklahoma City Thunder, as the former Baylor swingman has a thumb contusion, and the team is expected to take a cautious approach.
“Sources: Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe is out tonight against the Oklahoma City Thunder with a thumb contusion. The injury is not considered serious. The organization is holding Edgecombe out in an abundance of caution. He will be day-to-day going forward,” The Athletic’s Tony Jones said on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Edgecombe’s next chance to play for Philadelphia is on July 8 against the Memphis Grizzlies.
